Bangladesh calls upon US to ensure fair pricing of apparel

Bangladesh has sought fair pricing of its apparel products from United States, the single biggest destination country for the Bangladesh’s garments exports.
Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi conveyed the call to a visiting high-powered 12-member delegation of United States Trade Representative (USTR) at his ministry office on April 28, 2019, said a press release of the commerce ministry.
“It is necessary to ensure fair pricing of apparel in the US market. We brought fundamental changes to our apparel factories after the Rana Plaza collapse. Our factories are modern and safer now. Fire and building safety have been ensured,” Minister Munshi said.
“Our production cost to manufacture standard apparel products has risen. We have also ensured justified wages to our workers. Green factories are flourishing. Increasing investment in the apparel sector has pushed up production,” he said.
“However, our buyers are not raising their prices. The US market is a big apparel market for Bangladesh. Now it is time to ensure fair pricing of Bangladesh’s apparel in the US,” he said.
The minister also highlighted Bangladesh’s readiness to accept foreign investment and said that it is expecting US investment in the 100 Special Economic Zones project. He also touched on the incentive packages for investors at the meeting.
Meeting insiders said, discussions were also held on US-imported cotton’s dual fumigation, intellectual property rights, the trade policies of the US, rights of the workers at Bangladesh’s factories, investment and the graduation of Bangladesh out of least developed country (LDC) club.
The USTR delegation was headed by US government’s Deputy Assistant USTR Zeba Riazuddin, and accompanied by US Ambassador to Dhaka Earl Miller. Bangladesh side was led by Commerce Secretary Md Mofizul Islam.
